What Is UNO Flip?

UNO Flip is an official variant of the classic UNO game that introduces a brand-new mechanic: a double-sided deck. One side is the familiar "Light Side" — similar to standard UNO — and the other is the brutal "Dark Side," featuring much harsher penalties and powerful action cards. A single Flip card can change the entire mood of the game in an instant.

The Deck: Light Side vs. Dark Side

UNO Flip uses a 112-card deck with two distinct sides:

Light Side (Standard Play)

  • Colors: Red, Yellow, Green, Blue
  • Number cards 1–9, Draw One, Skip, Reverse, and Flip cards
  • Wild and Wild Draw Two cards

Dark Side (Activated by a Flip Card)

  • Colors: Pink, Teal, Orange, Purple
  • Number cards 1–9, Draw Five (!), Skip Everyone, Reverse, and Flip cards
  • Wild and Wild Draw Color cards

How the Flip Card Works

When a player plays a Flip card, everyone flips their entire hand over, the draw pile is flipped, and the discard pile is turned over. Play continues on whichever side is now face up. This can be devastating — especially if someone flips to the Dark Side just before another player is about to win.

Dark Side Action Cards Explained

Dark Side CardEffect
Draw FiveNext player draws 5 cards and loses their turn.
Skip EveryoneEvery other player loses their next turn. Only you continue.
Wild Draw ColorYou pick the color AND the next player draws cards until they get one matching that color.
FlipFlips all cards back to the other side of the deck.

Key Rule Differences From Classic UNO

  • On the Light Side, you draw one card when you can't play (not unlimited).
  • Wild Draw Two (Light Side) makes the next player draw 2 cards, not 4.
  • Wild Draw Color on the Dark Side can force a player to draw many cards — there's no cap!
  • Skip Everyone affects all other players simultaneously — a powerful tactical card.

Tips for Playing UNO Flip

  • Hold Flip cards strategically. Play one when you're on the better side — or to ruin a nearly-winning opponent's hand.
  • Avoid the Dark Side late in the game if you're ahead. The Wild Draw Color can wipe out your lead instantly.
  • Don't underestimate Skip Everyone. In a 4+ player game, it's essentially a free extra turn for you.
  • Keep track of which side is active — it's easy to forget and play the wrong card by mistake.

Who Is UNO Flip Best For?

UNO Flip is best suited for players who already know classic UNO and want a more intense, unpredictable experience. The Dark Side cards can feel brutal, so it's worth warning new players beforehand. It works especially well with 3–6 players and adds meaningful strategic decisions around when to trigger a Flip. If you enjoy classic UNO but crave more chaos and higher stakes, UNO Flip is an excellent upgrade.
